This paper presents the results of the new interdisciplinary research done on Leonhard Rauwolf’s herbarium with plants from the Middle East, which was later owned by Emperor Rudolf II. Using various sources, it examines how the herbarium came into the imperial collections, Early Modern methods of botanical research as described by Rauwolf in his printed travelogue, and how the illustrations for the printed book were produced from the specimens in the herbarium. The appendix (available in the online version) presents the (...) new corrected botanical identification of the c. 200 plants in the fourth volume of Rauwolf’s herbarium, and a correct transcription of the Early Modern Latin and vernacular names Rauwolf collected for these plants. I define serendipity as the art of making an unsought finding. And I propose an overview of my collection of serendipities, the largest yet assembled, chiefly in science and technology, but also in art, by giving a list of ‘serendipity patterns’. Although my list of ‘patterns’ is just a list and not a classification, it serves to introduce a new and possibly stimulating perspective on the old subject of serendipity. In this paper we discuss the social and ethical issues that arise as a result of digitization based on six dominant technologies: Internet of Things, robotics, biometrics, persuasive technology, virtual & augmented reality, and digital platforms. We highlight the many developments in the digitizing society that appear to be at odds with six recurring themes revealing from our analysis of the scientific literature on the dominant technologies: privacy, autonomy, security, human dignity, justice, and balance of power. This study shows that (...) the new wave of digitization is putting pressure on these public values. In order to effectively shape the digital society in a socially and ethically responsible way, stakeholders need to have a clear understanding of what such issues might be. Supervision has been developed the most in the areas of privacy and data protection. For other ethical issues concerning digitization such as discrimination, autonomy, human dignity and unequal balance of power, the supervision is not as well organized. (shrink)

This "handmaiden" role of archaeology has been challenged in the past two decades, and links between history and archaeology have been strengthened by changes in both disciplines, especially in the range of data utilized if not in method and approach. The exploration of the southern Argolid also emerged in the context of two vastly different yet complementary excavations at the Paleolithic-Neolithic Franchthi Cave and Classical Halieis. The chronological, methodological, and environmental scope and problem orientation of these projects were important in setting the stage for the examination of human history in the broader region, emphasizing human-environment interaction as important to understanding culture change through time.A Greek Countryside presents the results of the survey (conducted in 1972 and 1979-1983) in the southern Argolid (225 km2) that recovered some 328 sites from an intensive sample of 44 km2. The first three chapters, "Topography," "History," and "Land and Sea in the Southern Argolid," provide an introduction to the study area. They present the synchronous dimensions of observable terrain, environment, and communication routes, and the diachronic perspectives of history (1000 B.C.-modern times), geomorphology, and environmental studies. Chapter 4, "The Archaeological Survey," describes the process and methods of fieldwork, the basis for the identification and functional designations of sites, and the classificatory nomenclature of the observable settlement patterns. Chapter [End Page 333] 5, "Using the Resources of the Land and Sea," is a discussion of agricultural, pastoral, and maritime activities derived from archaeological evidence from Franchthi Cave, Halieis, and wider afield, and from ethnography, studies of ancient and modern agriculture, and Medieval and Venetian records and travelers' accounts. This chapter injects the human element into the natural environment, setting the stage for the patterns of interaction between cultural and natural landscapes. The authors' synthesis and conclusions are presented in the final chapter 6, unambiguously titled, "Fifty Thousand Years of Coevolution of Landscape and Human Settlement."This concluding chapter is wonderfully detailed, referring back to the data presented in previous chapters and forward to the numerous appendices. The appendices are focused treatments of the sites recovered (A); population estimates (B); pseudo-Scylax's periplus (C); Pausanias' account of the south Argolid (D); the town of Hermion (E); the border dispute between Hermion and Epidauros in the first half of the second century B.C. (F); and an account of the Turkish traveler, Evliya Chelebi, in 1669 (G). Chapter 6 is somewhat of an achievement in itself, providing a lucid and fascinating chronological and historical narrative, un-encumbered by tendentious footnotes or cross-references, while making the reader constantly aware of both the data and the interpretive basis for conclusions. Although the diachronic survey maps, showing settlement patterns, are presented earlier in chapter 4, more detailed maps illustrate chapter 6 and are essential and effective complements to the text.The effects of... To reduce CO2 emissions requires greater reliance on renewable sources of energy for generating electricity, especially adoption of large-scale wind generation. This study investigates possible approaches and/or policies that increase efficient use of renewable energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in a cost effective manner. We develop a constrained optimization model of two electricity systems to identify the impact of increasing wind generating capacity and examine how carbon prices (taxes, allowances) impact the penetration of wind power into the electricity grids. (...) Rather than employ engineering cost functions, marginal cost functions are estimated using hourly offer data from the Alberta Electric System Operator. We determine optimal removal of coal generating facilities as greater levels of wind capacity are installed in an integrated Alberta-BC electricity system; and examine the economic costs and institutional incentives that affect the ability to store intermittent wind-generated power in BC’s hydro reservoirs during low demand. The marginal shadow price of storage is zero, whichindicates that there is more than enough water behind the dams given Alberta’s relatively small demand for storage and limited intertie transmission capacity. There is a consensus among scientists that climate change is an existing, growing, and human-made threat to our planet. The topic is a divisive issue worldwide, including among people of faith. Little research has focused on the relationship between (non)religious belief and climate change. Hence, in Studies 1 and 2, the authors explore the impact of religious/non-religious orientations: intrinsic (religion as an end in itself), extrinsic (religion as a means to an end), quest (a journey toward religious understanding), and non-religious (...) orientation (i.e., atheistic) on consumer attitudes toward the environment, focusing on recycling advertisements with (non)religious cues. Further, in Study 3, we examine the underlying causal mechanism of environmental identity and the moderating effect of political views on consumers’ lack of belief in climate change. The results show that religious people are less committed to the environment and climate change and that atheism positively affects recycling and climate change identity. The findings offer practical implications in that advertising campaigns need to be endorsed by religious leaders and channeled within the confines of the religious institutions they represent. As artefacts, the worlds of digital games are designed and developed to fulfil certain expressive, functional, and experiential objectives. During play, players infer these purposes and aspirations from various aspects of their engagement with the gameworld. Influenced by their sociocultural backgrounds, sensitivities, gameplay preferences, and familiarity with game conventions, players construct a subjective interpretation of the intentions with which they believe the digital game in question was created. By analogy with the narratological notion of the implied author, we call the (...) figure to which players ascribe these intentions ‘the implied designer’. In this article, we introduce the notion of the implied designer and present an initial account of how appreciators ascribe meaning to interactive, fictional gameworlds and act within them based on what they perceive to be the designer’s intentions. We sketch four applications of Marr's levels‐of‐analysis methodology to the relations between logic and experimental data in the cognitive neuroscience of language and reasoning. The first part of the paper illustrates the explanatory power of computational level theories based on logic. We show that a Bayesian treatment of the suppression task in reasoning with conditionals is ruled out by EEG data, supporting instead an analysis based on defeasible logic. Further, we describe how results from an EEG study on temporal prepositions (...) can be reanalyzed using formal semantics, addressing a potential confound. The second part of the article demonstrates the predictive power of logical theories drawing on EEG data on processing progressive constructions and on behavioral data on conditional reasoning in people with autism. Logical theories can constrain processing hypotheses all the way down to neurophysiology, and conversely neuroscience data can guide the selection of alternative computational level models of cognition. Coalition announcement logic is one of the family of the logics of quantified announcements. It allows us to reason about what a coalition of agents can achieve by making announcements in the setting where the anti-coalition may have an announcement of their own to preclude the former from reaching its epistemic goals. In this paper, we describe a PSPACE-complete model checking algorithm for CAL that produces winning strategies for coalitions. The algorithm is implemented in a proof-of-concept model checker.

A much discussed topic in the theory of choice is how a preference order among options can be derived from the assumption that the notion of ' choice' is primitive. Assuming a choice function that selects elements from each finite set of options, Arrow (Económica 26: 121-127,1959) already showed how we can generate a weak ordering by putting constraints on the behavior of such a function such that it reflects utility maximization. Arrow proposed that rational agents can be modeled by (...) such choice functions. Arrow's standard model of rationality has been criticized in economics and gave rise to approaches of bounded rationality. Two standard assumptions of rationality will be given up in this paper. First, the idea that agents are utility optimizers (Simon). Second, the idea that the relation of ' indifference' gives rise to an equivalence relation. To account for the latter, Luce (Econometrica 24: 178-191, 1956) introduced semi-orders. Extending some ideas of Van Benthem (Pac Philos Q 63: 193-203, 1982), we will show how to derive semi-orders (and so-called interval orders) based on the idea that agents are utility satisficers rather than utility optimizers. The Report's editorial mandate is both to examine issues of current importance and to invite bioethics to broaden the range of issues it probes. Thus along with articles exploring the relationship between patients and doctors, or health policy, or any of the myriad other familiar concerns of ethics in medicine, from time to time the Report has published articles about public health, animal experimentation, or “environmental ethics” broadly construed. The most recent was the special supplement Nature, Polis, Ethics in the (...) November‐December (1998) issue. Some, of course, have argued that “bio‐ethics” ought always to encompass concern for issues beyond the bedside. When the biologist Van Rensselaer Potter proposed the term bioethics nearly thirty years ago, the field he had in mind lay at the intersection of ethics and the biological sciences in general. In light especially of Nature, Polis, Ethics's call for a substantive “humans‐nature ethics” it seems appropriate, therefore, to invite one of the earliest proponents of a generous understanding of bioethics to reflect on the character of the field and the questions with which it should grapple. In dit artikel wordt de dominante metafysische oriëntatie in de hedendaagse meta-ethiek kritisch onder de loep genomen. Het hedendaagse debat, dat zich voornamelijk richt op de vraag hoe moraliteit metafysisch gezien 'in de werkelijkheid past', wordt gekenmerkt door een reeks complexe en soms esoterische discussies die, zo wordt betoogd, weinig bijdragen aan ons filosofische begrip van ethiek. Deze focus op metafysische grondslagen heeft geleid tot een tunnelvisie, waarin het debat gevangen zit tussen steeds ingewikkeldere vormen van non-cognitivisme, herconceptualisaties van 'objectiviteit' (...) en metafysische acrobatiek. Als alternatief wordt voorgesteld de aandacht in de meta-ethiek te verleggen naar het domein van praktisch redeneren. Door ons te concentreren op de patronen van geldige praktische argumentatie en het soort overwegingen dat mensen daadwerkelijk overtuigt, kunnen we wellicht een beter inzicht krijgen in de aard van ethische normativiteit en de rol ervan in ons leven. Het artikel pleit voor een meer pragmatische en minder metafysisch beladen benadering van de meta-ethiek, die zich richt op de daadwerkelijke praktijken van moreel redeneren en argumenteren. Van den Dries, L. and J. Holly, Quantifier elimination for modules with scalar variables, Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 57 161–179. We consider modules as two-sorted structures with scalar variables ranging over the ring. We show that each formula in which all scalar variables are free is equivalent to a formula of a very simple form, uniformly and effectively for all torsion-free modules over gcd domains . For the case of Presburger arithmetic with scalar variables the result takes a (...) still simpler form, and we derive in this way the polynomial-time decidability of the sets defined by such formulas. De kunstenaar J.S.G. Boggs tekende zijn eigen geld en probeerde dit uit te geven. Hierbij hield hij zich aan enkele regels. Hij schreef zichzelf voor dat hij zijn tekeningen niet mocht verkopen en alleen kon uitgeven in transacties. Boggs vroeg mensen of zij zijn Boggs-biljetten accepteerden voor de nominale waarde die hij er zelf op had getekend. Dit betekende ook dat hij in ruil niet alleen de waren wilde maar ook het wisselgeld en het bonnetje. Hoewel het aanbod vaak werd (...) afgewezen, lukte het hem bijvoorbeeld om een hamburger van drie dollar te kopen met een Boggs-biljet van duizend dollar. Naast de hamburger kreeg hij het bonnetje en het wisselgeld. Zo slaagde hij erin om miljoenen ‘dollars’ uit te geven. (shrink)

Toen onze grootouders als huilende baby’s ter wereld kwamen telde de vroedvrouw hun vingers en tenen om hun gezondheid te bepalen. Tegenwoordig wordt daarvoor een breed scala aan technieken ingezet, bijvoorbeeld om het bloed te screenen dat een paar dagen na de geboorte wordt afgenomen uit de hiel van een kind. Dit is de zogenaamde hielprik, ofwel de neonatale screening. De technieken die worden gebruikt om babybloed te analyseren hebben de afgelopen veertig jaar gezorgd voor verschuivingen in de visie op (...) wat ‘ziekte’ is en wat ‘gezondheid’. En naar alle waarschijnlijkheid gaan die betekenissen de komende tien jaar opnieuw veranderen, wanneer het goedkoper en effectiever wordt om het hele genoom van een kind bij de geboorte te analyseren dan om de huidige screeningsmethoden te blijven gebruiken. Hoe beïnvloeden deze ontwikkelingen onze visie op wat het betekent om een gezond kind te krijgen? En kunnen ouders in de toekomst ooit nog vol vertrouwen zeggen: ‘Ons kind blaakt van gezondheid’?
